Background of the study
News broadcasts in Nigeria are a crucial medium for disseminating information, and their language use is influenced by the country's rich linguistic diversity. This study assesses how indigenous languages shape the syntactic structures of Nigerian news broadcasts. Reporters and anchors often incorporate syntactic features from native languages—such as idiomatic expressions, clause structures, and rhetorical devices—into Nigerian English, thereby creating a distinctive broadcast style (Olu, 2023). The blending of indigenous syntactic patterns with standard English grammar reflects efforts to resonate with local audiences while maintaining professionalism. Preliminary observations suggest that such influences can enhance the relatability and clarity of news delivery, but may also introduce non-standard constructions that challenge conventional grammar (Nwosu, 2024). This research examines broadcast transcripts and conducts interviews with media professionals to document these syntactic phenomena and evaluate their impact on audience comprehension and credibility. The study contributes to an understanding of how language contact and cultural identity influence media language in a multilingual society (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident influence of indigenous languages on broadcast syntax, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the specific syntactic modifications present in Nigerian news. Early indications suggest that these modifications, while enhancing cultural resonance, may compromise grammatical precision (Chinedu, 2023). This study aims to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the influence of indigenous languages on the syntax of news broadcasts.
